Charli XCX threw this party 4 ‘I do’
Charli XCX just threw the coolest low-key wedding Hackney’s ever seen
Pop queen Charli XCX and the 1975’s George Daniel tied the knot this weekend in what might just go down as the most iconic “low-key” celebrity wedding of the decade – and it all happened right here on our Hackney doorstep.
Forget castles, helicopters and celebrity-studded guest lists flown in from LA. Charli and George kept it real: a registry ceremony at Hackney Town Hall, a family-style pasta dinner at Dalla (yep, the same one you’ve probably queued outside of), and a no-frills, full-throttle afterparty at Ellie’s, Dalston’s newest It-bar.
Martinis were £8, the couple DJ’d their own set, and trays of cigarettes were casually offered up like wedding favours. There was no red carpet, but there were lime bikes, brat vibes and the kind of party that goes ‘till 4am. It was giving indie sleaze, but in the chicest possible way.
Not every East London pub can claim Charli XCX as a newlywed guest – but now that the secret’s out, don’t be surprised if the High Street gets a little busier (and a lot more bratty). We always knew East London was the coolest place on earth!
As a Hackney-based publication, we’re honestly beaming. There’s something poetic about one of pop’s biggest innovators choosing to celebrate love in our part of town, surrounded by normalcy and all the urban edge East London can offer.
To whoever booked Ellie’s that night: well played.
To Hackney: you’re officially the capital of cool weddings now.
