Olivia Rodrigo continues love affair with “The Cure”. New song out Friday

Olivia Rodrigo’s long-running admiration for The Cure appears to have come full circle with the announcement of her brand-new single, “The Cure”, arriving this Friday.

The track, which Olivia has already described as one of her favourite songs she’s ever written, immediately sparked conversation online thanks to its unmistakable title, and for longtime fans, the reference is the most obvious nod. Rodrigo has spent the last few years openly celebrating her love for the legendary goth-pop pioneers and, in particular, their iconic frontman Robert Smith.

That admiration reached its peak last summer at Glastonbury Festival when Rodrigo stunned crowds by bringing Smith onstage during her headline set. Together, the pair performed Cure classics “Friday I’m In Love” and “Just Like Heaven”, in what quickly became one of the defining moments of the festival. Rodrigo called Smith “perhaps the best songwriter to come out of England,” while Smith himself revealed he’d become a genuine fan of the pop star’s work.

But the references to The Cure stretch back even further. Olivia has repeatedly cited the band as an influence in interviews, often praising their emotional songwriting and romantic melancholy, qualities that have increasingly seeped into her own music. Fans also noticed a direct nod on one of her recent songs, opening with the line: “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’,” referencing one of The Cure’s most beloved singles.

Now, with a song literally titled “The Cure”, Rodrigo seems to be wearing those influences louder than ever. This follows from chart topping single “drop dead” and her insane tour which incudes nine sold out nights in London.

Olivia’s third album “you seem pretty for a girl so in love” is out June 12th.
